More about asbestos removal
Removing asbestos is a risky operation and, according to the Asbestos Removal Decree, may only be carried out by a certified company. Nowadays, asbestos-containing materials that need to be removed are encountered in almost every demolition or dismantling project.
The word asbestos is derived from the Greek word Asbestos, meaning "indestructible". Due to this property, asbestos was used for many years in sound and heat insulation. Asbestos is a collective name for a group of silicon compounds. Characteristic of all types is the fibrous structure of the material. Asbestos dust consists of sharp, thin, and relatively long fibers. When inhaled, they easily lodge in the lungs and cause lung diseases and cancer.

Asbestos is life-threatening when the asbestos fibers are released. Most remaining asbestos is found in roads and buildings where people live or work. To prevent exposure to asbestos fibers, the government wants to remove as much asbestos as possible from the living environment. This must be done responsibly. Citizens, companies, and governments need to become more aware of the presence of asbestos and its dangers.
Some of the most common applications of asbestos are:
- corrugated roof sheets on sheds
- underlayment of vinyl flooring
- planters
- window sills
- spray coatings on steel constructions
- insulation material in old electrical appliances such as toasters, hairdryers, irons
- brake linings and clutch plates
- partition walls ('Eternit plate') and ceilings
- insulation around central heating boilers
